Hey! I am Morgan McDaniel and I am a senior at Terra Linda High School. I am in Marin School of Environmental Leadership, which is a magnet school within TLHS. We focus on project based learning, growing as leaders in our school and in our community, and we also work to help save the environment and the life living in it. For senior year, we get the opportunity to intern at an environmentally based program within our community. I decided to work with Watershed Alliance of Marin.
Laura Chariton, Judy Schriebman, and I decided for this year to create a Report Card of different creeks in Marin County. We have decided to work on Gallinas Creek, Miller Creek, Pacheco Creek, Novato Creek, and maybe a couple of others. We have been collecting key information to determine their healthiness. This includes, dissolved oxygen, pH, phosphates, and the type of organisms surrounding the creek. When we are finish collecting data, we will bring it all together and create a grading scale for the creeks based on their healthiness.
On November 19th, Laura, Judy, and me, met with Tom and Mark at Peet’s Coffee in Hamilton to teach them about our research and how we are going to use Surveymonkey to record our research. We also discussed how long this research for the Report Card should take, while admiring the Saturday morning rain. After that, we went to the Pacheco Creek where it bends behind the skate park in Hamilton. Right at the fence along the creek, we found a red tailed hawk laying on its back with its eyes wide open. Judy ran back to her car to grab a towel and wrapped it up. We decided to change our plans for the day and instead of recording the creek, we took the scared bird to WildCare in San Rafael. It turns out she is about one years old and had broken her clavicle. Right now, her clavicle is bandaged, and she is slowly recovering from her injury. After we dropped her off, we explored the San Rafael creek and noticed that the city is controlling the water flow of the creek so there isn’t a flood because of how hard it was raining.
